TAILOR (pomatomus saltatrix) are predominatly an ocean fish found around surf beaches and headlands but in saying this large schools will often enter our local rivers and sometimes even travel well upstream. Tailor are a hard fighting full on predatory species that hunt in packs on schools of hapless baitfish. It is not a difficult job to locate these fish at times with the tell tale signs of their activity being flocks of sea birds plummeting into the water as the surface is whipped to foam from the tailor smashing the baitfish. Fishing with light tackle and high speed spinning with metal slugs is an exciting way to catch as is trolling with hard bodied minnow lures. Another great thing about this fiesty fish is that they will often jump out of the water and thrash their heads from side to side in their attempt to throw the hook adding to visual fun of the fight.
